The complete winter-readiness checklist for your home heating system

The complete winter readiness checklist for your home heating system Premier Heating Solutions

As the nights draw in and temperatures start to drop, now is the perfect time to give your home heating system some attention. A well-prepared heating setup means fewer surprises, better comfort and improved efficiency when the cold really hits. At Premier Heating Solutions, we have put together this comprehensive checklist to help you get your system winter-ready.

1. Schedule a professional service

The first step is to book a full service of your boiler and heating system. Our team, registered with the relevant industry bodies, can check the boiler, flue, controls and safety devices to ensure everything is operating correctly. A serviced system is more reliable, safer and more energy efficient.

2. Inspect visible pipework and insulation

Walk around your home and look at any exposed pipework—particularly in unheated areas such as lofts, garages or under floorboards. Check for cracks, condensation or signs that the insulation is thinning. Cold pipework can slow down your heat delivery and increase your energy bills. If insulation is deteriorating, now is the time to renew it.

3. Check for leaks and drips

Even a small leak can lead to big problems: loss of pressure in your heating system, cold spots on radiators, or worse, water damage. Inspect radiators, valves, pipe joints and boiler connections for any sign of corrosion or water seeping out. If you spot any leaks, call a professional immediately—it’s far cheaper to repair early than to deal with a major breakdown mid-winter.

4. Bleed your radiators

Air trapped in your radiators reduces their efficiency and can lead to cold patches. Using a radiator key, slightly open the bleed valve until water starts to emerge (and stop when that happens), then retighten. Do this for all radiators when the system is cold. After bleeding, you may need to top up the system pressure (following the boiler manufacturer’s instructions). Regular bleeding can make your home feel warmer, without upping the thermostat.

5. Check thermostat and controls

Your thermostat, room controls and any smart heating devices are the brain of your system, so inspect and test them.

  • Set your thermostat to a desired “comfy” temperature and verify it reaches it.
  • For programmable or smart systems, check the schedule is correct (for example, lower when you’re out/awake, higher when you’re home/asleep).
  • Clean or change any batteries in wireless controls.
  • Consider whether your current thermostat mode is optimal—you may benefit from revising it for the cooler season.

6. Review system pressure and expansion vessel

Most modern boilers will display a system pressure gauge. If the pressure is too low (for example below 1 bar when cold) your system might struggle to circulate water properly. If it’s too high, you risk triggering the relief valve. Our engineers can check and reset the expansion vessel if required—an often-overlooked component that keeps pressure fluctuations under control.

7. Check your thermostat’s frost-protection or holiday mode

If you leave the home for extended periods (holidays, worksites, etc), make sure your boiler and heating system have their frost-protection mode enabled. This will prevent freezing in pipes and help avoid expensive repair bills. If your system doesn’t support this mode, consider contacting us to discuss your options.

8. Clean or check radiators and vents

Dust and debris on radiator fins or convector panels can reduce heat output. Use a vacuum or brush to clean behind and underneath radiators. Also check any vents or air grilles are unobstructed. This simple step helps ensure your heating is working as intended and your home warms more evenly.

9. Inspect boiler flue and external vents

Ensure the boiler flue (if fitted externally) is clear of debris or leaves. Blocked flues restrict the safe exhaust of combustion gases and can cause your boiler to shut down. At Premier Heating Solutions, we inspect flues for obstruction, corrosion and ensure safe distances from windows, vents and neighbouring surfaces.

10. Validate smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

When the heating system is active, it’s even more important that your smoke and CO alarms work correctly. Carbon monoxide is invisible, odourless and potentially lethal. Check batteries or wiring and test alarms. If you don’t yet have a CO alarm near your boiler/fuel-burning appliance, we strongly recommend installing one.

11. Evaluate system history and plan for upgrades

If your boiler or heating system is older (10–15 years or more) or you’ve noticed repeated breakdowns, cold spots, noisy pipes or excessive bills, this is a good time to consider an upgrade. At Premier Heating Solutions we can survey your system and advise on modern, high-efficiency boilers, smart controls or underfloor heating alternatives.

12. Create a user-friendly log

Keep a simple log or record of your maintenance: when the service was done, what the pressure is after bleeding, when your last thermostat battery change occurred. This will help you track performance and patterns. If any issue arises, our service engineers can refer to this log and diagnose issues more quickly.

13. Know your manufacturer’s warranty and plan for safety certificates

If your boiler is still under warranty, ensure that your annual service is undertaken by a qualified engineer (such as our Gas Safe / OFTEC registered team) to keep the warranty valid. Keep any service reports, invoices and safety certificates in a safe place.

14. Final test before the cold really sets in

Turn the heating on and let the system run for 20–30 minutes, then walk around your home.

  • Are all radiators warm and evenly heated?
  • Any cold spots near the pipe runs or underfloor areas?
  • Are you hearing unusual noises (gurgling, banging, whistling)?

If anything seems off, contact Premier Heating Solutions to diagnose the issue before the deep freeze arrives.

Why this checklist matters
